Books 2014

This year (2014) I made illustrations for 8 books. And the year is not over yet!

For Delubas Publishers I illustrated two books. The first book is called "The Flight of the puppeteer," and was written by Peter Vervloed. Because I'm heavily influenced by comics and cartoonists (Franquin, Jacobs, Herge, Munuera etc.) my illustrations have more in common with comics illustrations than you typically find in youth and children's books.

For Delubas Publishers I also illustrated "Collision Course" written by Piet van der Waal. When I illustrate I always alternate close ups with prospects and often I also use perspectives that are out of proportion. I like action in a drawing, so I always try to use surprising camera positions.
Both books are in stores all over Holland. They are also to be found in libraries.

Just before and during the summer of 2014, I worked on four books for Oxford University Press South Africa. They will be published later this year and I will show illustrations later.

Currently, autumn 2014, I'm working on two children's books. A book for Benchmark Education Publishers in New York that is written by American children's author Lori Mortensen.
I'm also working on a children's book for a Dutch publisher. I can't show anything yet since both books haven't been published.

Along with science journalist Govert Schilling I work on our graphic novel. In spring 2014, we have completed about 100 pages in sketch. We are now in the stage that a number of pages (15 to 20 units) will be worked out as finals.  Examples of the pages are shown below, but they are not finished yet. The book will eventually comprise about 400 pages.

Poster Kwink

For Kwintessens Publishers I created a poster on A2 format. Kwink is a world full of animals. The poster will be spread under Dutch children who are at Grammar schools.

The details and the first sketch.

Spring 2014

It's been quite busy lately. I work and have worked on several projects the recent months. For Benchmark Education Company New York I made some illustrations. Below some examples and sketches.

Delubas, a Dutch publisher, asked me to illustrate two books. Since the books are not published yet I will only show sketches so far. In a few months time the books will be in the stores and then I will show more material.
The first book is called 'Ramkoers', what is translated as 'Collision Course'.

The second book is called 'De vlucht van de poppenspeler', what is translated as 'The flight of the puppeteer'.

For another Dutch publisher, Kwintessens, I'm creating a world with animals. The animals are just like humas with all their good and bad behaviour.

Yet another Dutch publisher, TeamTalento, asked me if I can give video lessons in drawing for kids at school. We recorded so far about 16 lessons and from August 2014 it will appear at about 3000 Dutch schools. New lessons are to be followed and I also made a book for the lessons.

Graphic novel part 1

For some time now, I'm working on a graphic novel. The graphic novel is about man's search for extraterrestrial life. Since it is a very extensive work it will take some time before it will be published. In this blog I will occasionally give an insight into the graphic novel; elaborate pages, sketches, etc. Below are some pages from the graphic novel where you can see a comic in the graphic novel. A science fiction comic that is read by one of the main characters (Tom). For all the material published on this blog is that it may change during the process. In most cases, the pages are, therefore, not yet finished.

Toni Cannelloni

I started this project several years ago. I wanted to make a comic about a guy who's father desperatly wants to join the mob. Toni, the son is helping his father Marco to achieve that goal. But Marco is a looser and even the most easy job is totally spoilt by him. So the mob doesn't want Marco to join them.
I made many sketches and a few pages I worked out to a comic. Besides that I made a 3D design of Toni.
In the end I only made those sketches, a few pages and the 3D design. Just because a lack of time...
